Which Claude Certification Should You Take First?

Which Claude certification should you take first?

Pick by role, not by a ladder. Anthropic’s four proctored Claude exams — Associate Foundations (CCAO-F), Developer Foundations (CCDV-F), Architect Foundations (CCAR-F / colloquial CCA-F), and Architect Professional (CCAR-P) — have no prior-cert prerequisite. You choose based on whether you mainly use Claude in workflows, build on the API, or architect agentic systems (Foundations breadth vs Professional depth).

All four are delivered through Pearson Professional Assessments (often still labeled Pearson VUE / OnVUE). Registration is open to organisations in the Claude Partner Network, with a company-domain email on the partner record. Public Claude Academy courses and completion badges are a separate track — they do not replace Credly credentials for CCAO-F, CCDV-F, CCAR-F, or CCAR-P.

Use the path selector below as a role heuristic. For two-exam decisions, use the pairwise links near the end. For codes and aliases — including why people say “CCA-F” when Pearson lists CCAR-F — see exam codes.

Four exams in one table

The live table below is generated from this site’s certification metadata (fees, item counts, domain counts, hub links). List prices: Associate $99, Developer $125, Architect Foundations $125, Architect Professional $175. All four list 120 minutes. Item counts: 60 / 53 / 60 / 63 for CCAO-F, CCDV-F, CCAR-F, and CCAR-P. Checkout on Partner Academy is authoritative if your partner tier changes the amount shown.

Who each exam is for

  • CCAO-F ($99, 60 items) — Non-engineering professionals who use Claude Projects, write prompts, evaluate outputs, and embed Claude in day-to-day work (ops, marketing, PM, education, communications). Domains emphasize evaluation (21%), workflow integration (16%), governance (15%), prompting (14%), product/model selection (12%), configuration (12%), and troubleshooting (10%). Hub: Associate.
  • CCDV-F ($125, 53 items) — Engineers who ship production Claude features (API, tools/MCP, agents in code, evals). Domain shape is application-heavy: Applications and Integration (~33%), Model Selection (~17%), Agents and Workflows (~15%), Prompt/Context (~11%), Tools/MCP (~11%), Security (~8%), with smaller Claude Code and Eval weights. Hub: Developer.
  • CCAR-F ($125, 60 items) — Solution architects designing agentic systems: orchestration (27%), Claude Code workflows (20%), structured output (20%), MCP tool design (18%), context reliability (15%). Official Pearson code is CCAR-F (“CCA-F” is a common alias). Hub: Architect Foundations.
  • CCAR-P ($175, 63 items) — Mid- to senior architects who already operate at Foundations fluency and also own solution design (17%), integration (19%), evaluation (16%), governance (14%), stakeholder lifecycle (14%), models/prompting (13%), and operational enablement (7%). Hub: Architect Professional.

Shared rules across all four: pass score 720/1000, credential valid 12 months, on-time renewal is a free, non-proctored Partner Academy assessment, retake waits 14 / 30 / 90 days with a max of four attempts per exam per rolling year. Credly issues the proctored badge — that is not a Claude Academy completion badge.

No prerequisite chain — and Foundations vs Professional

Associate → Developer → Architect → Professional is a useful difficulty story, not a registration rule. A platform engineer can go straight to CCAR-F or CCAR-P. A marketer can take Associate now and Developer later if the job becomes technical. Attempt limits are per exam code, so failing CCDV-F does not consume CCAR-F attempts. Holding CCAR-F does not waive CCAR-P fees or unlock automatic discounts.

Foundations (CCAR-F) asks whether you can design and operate agentic Claude systems (orchestration, Claude Code, MCP, structured outputs, context). Professional (CCAR-P) keeps that fluency and adds governance, evaluation at scale, stakeholder communication, and delivery lifecycle — at a higher fee ($175 vs $125) and item count (63 vs 60). Soft advice: Professional assumes Foundations-level fluency even though no prior cert is required. Dedicated deep dive: CCAR-F vs CCAR-P. Associate and Developer have no published “Professional” counterpart in the current catalogue.

Suggested first exam by role

  • Business operator / knowledge worker → CCAO-F. Study evaluation, governance, Projects, and knowing when to escalate. Skip Developer/Architect until you own API or agentic-system work.
  • Application engineer shipping Claude features → CCDV-F. Budget time toward Applications and Integration. Add CCAR-F later if you own multi-agent or Claude Code standards for a team.
  • Solutions / AI platform architect → CCAR-F, then CCAR-P when governance and stakeholder scope match. Associate is usually unnecessary unless you also coach large non-technical rollouts.
  • Tech lead spanning apps + agents → CCDV-F first if you live in feature PRs; CCAR-F first if your calendar is design reviews and MCP/Claude Code standards. Avoid starting with CCAR-P.
  • Partner consultant wearing many hats → pick the exam that matches the engagement you sell most often. Collecting all four over time is fine; rushing them in one quarter is usually poor prep hygiene given retake waits and 12-month validity clocks.
  • Not in Partner Network yet → learn via public Claude Academy and independent prep; registration still requires partner affiliation. No third party can bypass that gate.

How registration works

  1. Confirm Claude Partner Network affiliation and a company-domain email.
  2. Open the credential on the Anthropic Partner Academy, download the exam guide, read policies.
  3. Register and check out (list prices above; checkout may reflect partner-tier pricing).
  4. Create or sign in to your Pearson account and schedule online or test-centre proctoring.
  5. On exam day, bring government photo ID that matches your registration name.
