Explanation

The Four Surfaces

SurfaceBest forNotes
Plain chatQuick, one-off questions and short tasksNo persistent knowledge beyond the conversation
ProjectsRecurring work around a shared body of knowledgePersistent instructions + uploaded knowledge reused across chats
Research modeDeeper, multi-source investigationGathers and synthesizes across sources for a fuller answer
ArtifactsSubstantial, self-contained deliverablesA separate editable window for documents, tables, content you'll refine or share

Each surface fits a different shape of work. Plain chat is disposable and conversational; Projects persist knowledge so it does not have to be re-supplied; research mode widens the input aperture across sources; Artifacts widen the output into a standalone, editable deliverable.

Reading the Signal

Two simple rules of thumb decide most cases:

  • If you keep re-pasting the same background into new chats, that is a signal to use a Project -- the recurring knowledge belongs in a persistent workspace, not in every conversation.
  • If the output is a polished, reusable document rather than a chat reply, that is a signal for an Artifact -- the deliverable deserves its own editable space rather than living inside the conversational thread.

Common exam traps

  • Defaulting to plain chat for a workflow that reuses the same knowledge every time -- a Project fits better, since it removes the need to re-paste background on every request.
  • Treating Artifacts as just longer chat messages, missing that they are an editable, shareable output surface distinct from the conversation itself.

Key Takeaways

  • Plain chat suits quick, one-off questions with no need for persistent knowledge
  • Projects persist instructions and knowledge reused across many chats -- the fix for repeated re-pasting
  • Research mode is for deeper investigation that synthesizes across multiple sources
  • Artifacts are a separate editable window for substantial, shareable deliverables, not just long chat replies
  • Recurring re-pasted background signals a Project; a reusable document output signals an Artifact
