Explanation

What a Project Bundles

A Project is a persistent workspace that every chat inside it can draw on. It bundles two things:

ComponentWhat it is
InstructionsStanding guidance for how Claude should behave in this Project -- role, tone, format, rules, what to prioritize
Project knowledgeUploaded documents and reference material Claude can draw on to ground its answers

Because both persist across every conversation in the Project, you configure them once and reuse them across every future chat -- there is no need to re-paste the brief, the brand guide, or the FAQ each time a new conversation starts.

When a Project Is the Right Tool

Projects are the natural home for recurring, knowledge-heavy work: a client account you support repeatedly, a product line you write about often, a report you regenerate on a cadence. If the same context would otherwise be pasted into chat after chat, that context belongs in Project instructions or Project knowledge instead.

A plain, one-off chat is still fine for work that doesn't recur -- the Project's value is specifically the persistence of standing guidance and curated reference material across many conversations.

Common exam traps

  • Pasting the same context into each new chat instead of putting it in Project instructions/knowledge once. This is the single most common exam trap for this topic: the correct configuration choice is almost always "put it in the Project," not "paste it again."
  • Assuming a more capable model, rather than a Project, is the fix for repeated context -- model choice does not solve a configuration/persistence problem.

Key Takeaways

  • A Project bundles standing instructions (role, tone, format, rules) and project knowledge (uploaded reference material)
  • Both persist across every conversation in the Project, eliminating repeated pasting of the same brief
  • Projects fit recurring, knowledge-heavy work: a client account, a product line, a repeated report
  • Repeatedly pasting the same context into new chats is a common exam trap -- the fix is a Project, not a better model
