Claude Certification Exam Policies: Registration, Retakes & Renewal

This page applies identically to all four Claude certifications

Everything on this page — registration mechanics, identification rules, accommodations, retake waiting periods, renewal, and appeals — is the same regardless of which credential you're pursuing: Claude Certified Architect – Foundations, Claude Certified Architect – Professional, Claude Certified Associate – Foundations, or Claude Certified Developer – Foundations. For exam-specific facts — fee, item count, time, and domain weighting for each credential — see each cert's own hub page. For a side-by-side comparison of all four, see the Claude certifications overview.

Anthropic runs a single, unified exam program across all four Claude certifications. Every exam is registered through the Anthropic Partner Academy and delivered through Pearson VUE, and every exam shares the same registration workflow, identification rules, accommodations process, retake waiting-period structure, renewal cycle, and appeals process. This page is the single authoritative, full-depth reference for all of that shared mechanics — written once, in full detail, so that each certification's own pages can stay focused on what's actually specific to that exam (its fee, its domain blueprint, its intended audience) rather than repeating registration and retake logistics four separate times.

Registration & Scheduling

Registering for any Claude certification exam follows the same six-step process, regardless of which of the four credentials you're pursuing. Here's the complete walkthrough.

  1. Review the exam page on the Anthropic Partner Academy. Each of the four credentials has its own certification page on the Partner Academy. Start there to confirm you're looking at the correct exam — the four credentials have similar names, and it's easy to land on the wrong one if you're navigating from a search result rather than a direct link.
  2. Download the exam guide and read the policy documents. Before registering, download the official Exam Guide for your chosen credential and read both the Certification Terms and Conditions and the Certification Exam Policy in full. These documents govern everything from conduct during the exam to how disputes are handled, and registering constitutes agreement to them.
  3. Register and complete checkout at the fee reflecting your partner tier. The fee displayed at checkout reflects any discount that applies to your partner tier — this is why the fee you see may differ from a list price you've seen elsewhere. Complete checkout to finalize registration.
  4. Create your Pearson VUE account. After registering, you'll receive confirmation instructions for creating a Pearson VUE account. Pearson VUE is Anthropic's exam delivery partner and handles all scheduling, identity verification, and proctoring — you cannot schedule a session without completing this step.
  5. Schedule your session: online-proctored or test center. Once your Pearson VUE account is active, schedule your exam. You can choose either an online-proctored session (taken from your own computer, monitored remotely) or an in-person session at a Pearson VUE test center, depending on availability and your preference.
  6. Know the 24-hour cancellation and reschedule window. You can cancel or reschedule your appointment up to 24 hours before your scheduled start time at no penalty. Any cancellation or reschedule request made within 24 hours of your appointment forfeits the exam fee — you would need to register and pay again for a new attempt.
The 24-hour window is strict

There is no stated grace period or exception process for the 24-hour cancel/reschedule rule short of the formal appeals process below. If your plans might change, build in buffer before you schedule rather than assuming you can push the date later without cost.

Choosing online-proctored vs. a Pearson VUE test center

Both delivery modes lead to the identical exam — same items, same time limit, same scoring — so the choice comes down to logistics and personal preference rather than any difference in difficulty or content. Online-proctored means you take the exam from your own computer, with a remote proctor monitoring your session via webcam and screen share for the full duration; it removes travel time entirely, but it requires a private, quiet room, a reliable internet connection, and a workspace that meets Pearson VUE's remote-testing environment rules (a clear desk, no second monitor, no other people entering the room, and so on). Testing at a Pearson VUE test center means going to a physical location where staff handle identity verification and proctoring in person, using site-provided equipment. If your home environment is noisy, shared, or otherwise unlikely to pass an online remote-environment check, a test center appointment removes that entire category of risk — at the cost of needing to travel to an available site on the day you book. Availability for both modes varies by date and, for test centers, by location, so check both options before committing to a specific day.

Identification Requirements

On exam day, you must present a valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID. This applies whether you're testing online-proctored or at a physical Pearson VUE test center — the proctor, whether remote or in person, will check your ID before allowing you to begin.

The single most important detail here: the name on your ID must match the name on your exam registration exactly. A mismatch — a middle name included on one but not the other, a maiden name versus a married name, a nickname used at registration versus a legal name on your ID — can result in being turned away from your appointment, which functions the same as a no-show (see below) unless it's resolved in advance.

Fix name mismatches before you schedule, not on exam day

If you know your registration name and your ID name don't match, don't wait until exam day to sort it out. Contact certifications-support@anthropic.com to request a name correction on your registration before you schedule your session. Resolving this proactively avoids the risk of forfeiting your fee to a no-show.

Accommodations

Anthropic's certification program provides accommodations for candidates with documented disabilities or other qualifying needs, in accordance with applicable law. The critical procedural point is timing: accommodations must be requested and approved by Pearson VUE before you schedule your exam appointment. Scheduling first and requesting accommodations afterward is not supported — approval has to be in place before the appointment exists.

How to request accommodations, step by step

  1. Before scheduling anything, go to pearsonvue.com/us/en/test-takers/accommodations and review the accommodations request process and what documentation is required for your specific need.
  2. Submit your accommodations request through that Pearson VUE channel, along with the required supporting documentation of your disability or need, well ahead of when you intend to test.
  3. Wait for Pearson VUE's approval before proceeding. Do not schedule your exam appointment during this waiting period — approval must be finalized first.
  4. Once approved, proceed to schedule your exam appointment as normal; your approved accommodations will be applied to the session you book.
Don't schedule before approval comes through

Scheduling before your accommodations request is approved risks having to reschedule (subject to the standard 24-hour cancellation rule) once approval finally lands, or sitting the exam without the accommodation in place. Build the approval step into your timeline before you pick a date.

Retake Policy

If you don't pass on a given attempt, you can retake the exam — but only after a required waiting period, and the waiting period gets longer with each consecutive failure. The table below shows the full ladder.

After this attempt failsRequired waiting period before the next attempt
1st failed attempt14 days
2nd failed attempt30 days
3rd failed attempt90 days
4th attemptNot permitted — 4 is the maximum attempts allowed in a rolling 12-month period

Waiting periods are cumulative from each specific failed attempt, not from your first attempt. Maximum 4 attempts per exam per rolling 12-month period. Limits apply per exam — failing one Claude certification does not prevent you from registering for a different one. The exam fee applies again on every retake attempt.

Two details are easy to get wrong here. First, the waiting period resets from the most recent failed attempt, not from your first attempt — the 30-day wait after a second failure counts from that second failure's date, not from when you first sat the exam. Second, the 4-attempts-per-12-months cap and the waiting periods are both scoped to a single exam. If you fail Claude Certified Architect – Foundations, that does not touch your eligibility to register for Claude Certified Developer – Foundations or any other of the four credentials — each exam tracks its own attempt count and waiting periods independently.

Worked example: a realistic retake timeline

Suppose you sit an exam and fail on your first attempt in early January. Per the 14-day waiting period, your earliest possible retake is roughly two weeks later — mid-to-late January. If you retake it then and fail again, the clock resets: your next eligible date is 30 days from that second attempt, not 30 days from your original January attempt. So a second failure in late January pushes your earliest third attempt to late February or early March. If a third attempt also fails, the wait jumps to 90 days from that third attempt, landing your fourth and final permitted attempt (within the same rolling 12-month period) sometime around late May or June. At that point you've used all 4 permitted attempts for that specific exam within the 12-month window; a further attempt on that same credential would need to wait until you're outside that rolling 12-month period, or you'd pursue a different credential in the meantime while the window resets.

The fee applies every time

There's no discounted or bundled retake fee — each attempt, including retakes after a failure, is charged the exam's standard fee (as reflected at checkout for your partner tier) again in full.

No-shows and late arrivals

If you fail to appear for a scheduled exam, or arrive after the permitted late-arrival window has closed, you forfeit the exam fee entirely and must re-register (and pay again) to schedule a new attempt. This is functionally the same outcome as canceling within the 24-hour window — the fee is not refunded or credited toward a future attempt.

Renewal & Validity

Every Claude certification — all four of them — is valid for 12 months from the date it's awarded. This is a deliberate design choice: Claude, the Agent SDK, Claude Code, and MCP tooling all evolve quickly, and a 12-month validity window keeps the credential meaningfully tied to current practice rather than becoming a permanent, increasingly stale credential.

There are two very different paths depending on whether you renew before or after that 12-month window closes.

  • On-time renewal (before your 12 months expire): Review what's changed in the exam content since you last certified, then complete a free, non-proctored assessment through the Anthropic Partner Academy. There is no fee for on-time renewal — this is the reward for renewing before your credential lapses.
  • Lapsed renewal (after your 12 months expire): If your credential lapses before you renew, the non-proctored renewal assessment is no longer available to you. You must retake the full, proctored exam at the full fee to regain certified status — effectively starting over as if you were a new candidate.
  • Major content-change exception: Even if you renew on time, Anthropic may require a full proctored retake instead of the standard renewal assessment if the exam's content has changed significantly since you originally certified. This is at Anthropic's discretion and is meant to preserve the credential's meaning when the underlying exam blueprint shifts substantially.

Worked example: a renewal timeline

Say you pass an exam and are certified on March 1. Your credential is valid through the following March 1 (12 months later). If you complete the free non-proctored renewal assessment on the Partner Academy anytime before that date — say, in the preceding January or February, once you've reviewed what's changed in the exam content — your certification renews at no cost and your validity window rolls forward another 12 months. If instead you let March 1 pass without renewing, your credential lapses, and reinstating it now requires registering for and passing the full proctored exam again at the standard fee, exactly as if you were certifying for the first time.

Appeals

If you want to appeal a decision — a scoring concern, a procedural issue during your session, or another outcome you believe was handled incorrectly — you have 14 days to do so. Specifically: 14 days from the date you were notified of the decision you're appealing, or, if your concern is about an exam result itself, 14 days from the date of the exam.

Appeals are submitted to Pearson VUE support at pearsonvue.com/us/en/anthropic.html — the same channel used for general registration and scheduling support (see Support Contacts below). There is no separate Anthropic-run appeals channel; Pearson VUE, as Anthropic's exam delivery partner, handles the intake and processing of appeals on Anthropic's behalf.

The 14-day clock starts immediately — don't sit on a concern

Because the appeals window is measured from the notification or exam date rather than from when you happen to get around to filing, waiting even a couple of weeks to decide whether you want to appeal can put you right at, or past, the deadline. If you have any concern about your result or your session, start the appeals process promptly rather than deliberating for long.

Support Contacts

Two contact channels cover essentially everything you'd need for any of the four Claude certifications:

  • Name corrections on your registration: certifications-support@anthropic.com. Use this before scheduling if the name on your registration doesn't match your government ID.
  • Everything else — registration, scheduling, accommodations, results, and appeals: Pearson VUE support at pearsonvue.com/us/en/anthropic.html. This is Anthropic's dedicated Pearson VUE support page and is the correct first stop for the large majority of logistical questions.

Result Reporting

Every Claude certification exam is delivered proctored — either online-proctored from your own computer or in person at a Pearson VUE test center — and every exam reports results the same way. You receive a pass/fail outcome, a scaled score between 100 and 1,000 (with 720/1000 as the passing threshold across all four credentials), and a percent-correct breakdown by domain on your score report. That domain-level breakdown is useful even if you pass: it shows you which of the exam's domains you were strongest and weakest in, which is directly useful if you're also pursuing another one of the four credentials with overlapping domain content, or preparing for a renewal assessment down the line.
